Children of Silentown

…you’ll love this mysterious village

Stay quiet. Do as you’re told. DON’T go into the forest.

These are the rules for the Children of Silentown. In many ways, this sleepy village feels like the spot for an idyllic childhood. There are other kids to play with and free roam of the town, but the forest around the town is a vast lair of monsters that only come out at night. Venture in there after dark, and you may never escape.

Your character, Lucy, is one of the local children. Your mother was lost in that forest. You can hear the monsters at night screaming out there. Your room is adorned with pictures you’ve drawn of nightmares those screams have given you. An overprotective father keeps you close.

Of course, you can’t abide the status quo. One of your friends becomes afflicted, speaking only gibberish, and you have to find a way to help them.

This is where songs come in. Lucy has learned a form of folk magic involving singing, and throughout the game she’ll need this power to unlock secrets and solve puzzles.

Oh, and you can BET she’s going to end up in that forest!

This isn’t the most challenging of puzzle games, but it has a rich environment with a lot of ambient storytelling that lets you try to piece together the greater mystery before the plot comes right out and tells you. And I think there IS a lot that the plot won’t hit you over the head with that the story rewards you for pondering a little on your own.

There are multiple endings to the story, so consider how you might hope the plot resolves. If you study the mystery, you should have an opinion on the matter before the final credits roll.

P.S.: The little scrapbook journal you get for tracking what you know is adorable.
